Waldorf Astoria Is Coming to Helsinki – First of Its Kind in the Nordics

Big news for luxury travelers and Hilton fans: Waldorf Astoria is making its long-awaited debut in the Nordics. Hilton has officially announced that The Hotel Maria in Helsinki will be rebranded as Waldorf Astoria Helsinki later this year. This will be the first hotel under the prestigious Waldorf Astoria brand in both Finland and the entire Nordic region.

From Historic Helsinki to a World of Waldorf Luxury

Set in the beautiful Kruununhaka district, the hotel sits inside a historic building originally designed in 1885. The neighborhood is filled with charming streets, elegant architecture, and a peaceful local vibe — yet it’s still within easy walking distance of Helsinki’s main sights, like the Old Market Hall, Helsinki Cathedral, and the lush Esplanadi Park.

The building currently operates as The Hotel Maria and already offers a refined boutique-style experience. With 117 rooms, including 38 spacious suites, it features calming interiors in neutral tones, natural wood accents, and soft lighting — a perfect example of understated Nordic elegance.

From Boutique to Icon: A Smooth Evolution

The rebranding to Waldorf Astoria Helsinki is planned for later this year. In the meantime, the hotel will remain fully operational, so travelers can still book a stay — and perhaps even be among the first to witness the transformation as it happens.

In addition to its stylish rooms and suites, the hotel will offer a Nordic-inspired wellness spa with a traditional Finnish sauna, a modern fitness studio, and upscale dining and bar concepts that celebrate local flavors with global flair. While many of these features are already available at The Hotel Maria, they’ll be reimagined and refined under the Waldorf Astoria flag.

Rates and Reputation

At the moment, room rates at The Hotel Maria start at around 400 EUR per night, but Hilton has yet to release details on future pricing after the Waldorf Astoria name officially takes over. What’s certain is that this property will soon join the ranks of Waldorf Astoria hotels in Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Berlin, and other iconic European cities.

Hilton already runs three other properties in Helsinki — Hilton Helsinki Strand, Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa, and Hilton Helsinki Airport — but the addition of Waldorf Astoria gives the brand a true flagship hotel in Finland’s capital.
