Why I Still Carry the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card in a Hilton-Loving Household

If you’ve been following GajaDreams for a while, you already know one thing: we are proudly Team Hilton. We build trips around Conrad hotels, collect Hilton points like souvenirs, and lately we’re even working toward Hilton’s new Diamond Reserve status. Hilton is simple, generous, and very easy to love.

And yet, in my wallet, next to all those Hilton cards, there is one little rebel: the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card.

Alex calls it my “affair.” I prefer to call it smart diversification. And every year, when the $650 annual fee hits our account, we go through the same ritual. He looks at the statement, smiles, and asks, “So… are we finally cancelling it?”

Funny enough, I ask myself the same question. But somehow, year after year, the card survives. Not because it’s perfect. Not because it’s cheap. But because traveling isn’t only about squeezing out every cent of value. It’s also about flexibility, comfort, and enjoying different styles of luxury.

Watch Alex’s video on this topic below.

Living in a Hilton World - And Why I Still Want Marriott

Hilton feels like home to us. We know the rules, the benefits are clear, and Diamond status works almost everywhere in the same way. Breakfast, lounge access, upgrades, and credits are transparent and predictable. When you travel as much as we do, that clarity is powerful.

But sometimes we’re in a destination where there are no Hilton hotels at all — or we’ve already tried them and they simply didn’t convince us. In those moments, having another strong option becomes a big advantage.

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card gives me access to that entire ecosystem without starting from scratch every time. It doesn’t replace Hilton for us. It complements it. And in luxury travel, variety is part of the experience.

The Free Night Award That Still Makes the Card Worth It

One of the biggest reasons I originally fell in love with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card is the annual Free Night Award. It’s valid for properties costing up to 85,000 points, and you’re even allowed to top it up with up to 15,000 additional points to reach higher-value hotels.

We once used ours at Al Maha, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort in Dubai, turning a single certificate into a private desert villa that normally sells for well over $1,000 a night. Moments like that are exactly why people fall in love with points and miles in the first place.

Of course, Marriott has adjusted pricing, and those once-incredible sweet spots are harder to find today. But even now, the Free Night Award can still be worth several hundred dollars if you use it strategically. Every time I redeem it well, a big part of the $650 annual fee simply disappears in my mind.

It’s more than just a perk. It’s a reminder of why we play this whole travel game. And if you’re looking for great redemption ideas, check out my article on the best Marriott hotels worldwide where you can use this certificate smartly.

Marriott Platinum Status Without Chasing Nights

Another reason I keep the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card is instant Platinum Elite status.

That means I don’t need mattress runs or qualification stress. When we stay at Marriott brands, I’m recognized automatically. Lounge access, upgrades, late checkout, and breakfast at many properties make travel smoother and more comfortable.

We often book luxury stays through programs like Marriott Stars or Luminous on GajaDreams Hotels, which already include breakfast and perks, but status still matters. It improves upgrade chances and makes the experience feel more personal. Comfort is part of luxury, and Platinum delivers a lot of that.

Marriott Brilliant Dining Credits in Real Life

The Brilliant card comes with a $25 monthly dining credit, up to $300 per year. It’s not tied to Marriott at all, which means you can use it at virtually any restaurant worldwide – as long as they accept Amex. It’s nothing glamorous, but $300 back every year is still very real value.

Conclusion

In Alex’s latest video, the Brilliant card gets judged pretty hard. That’s fair – he’s looking at pure math and optimization.

But in the next article and video, we’ll flip the perspective.

We’ll show you how the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card can be a powerful luxury travel tool when used properly with Marriott stays, elite perks, and smart redemptions. And we’ll share more great benefits of this credit card.

Because real travelers don’t choose sides.

They choose the right card at the right moment.
